Sasuns Cafe offers a relaxed, no-frills dining experience centered on Mediterranean and Armenian flavors, with a mix of casual grill items and bakery treats. Located in Derwood, this spot feels like a neighborhood staple where familiarity and straightforward comfort food take center stage.

The atmosphere is unpretentious and welcoming, with many local diners dropping by early in the evening or for casual lunches. It’s the kind of place where families come together over shared platters, and solo visitors can enjoy a quick gyro or sandwich without fuss. The seating is simple, emphasizing function over style, making it a practical option for both dine-in and takeout.

Menu highlights like the Sasuns Kebab Platter and Falafel Platter stand out for those wanting authentic Mediterranean ingredients, while the pizza and sandwiches provide a more familiar fallback, though they might not be the star of the show here. The garlic sauce, frequently mentioned by regulars, clearly adds a flavorful touch that elevates the grilled and sandwich offerings. Pastries and baked goods give an added local bakery vibe, suitable for grabbing dessert or a snack alongside your meal.

Most guests appreciate the fresh, straightforward preparation — though some find that certain dishes, like the pizza or grilled meats, could use a bit more seasoning or a stronger flavor punch. Portion sizes are generous, making it a solid value for lunch or dinner, especially when sharing multiple platters.

This cafe feels most comfortable for casual meals where the emphasis is on familiar, home-style Mediterranean cooking rather than trendy or upscale dining. It fits neatly into the local fabric for those craving hearty, approachable food without bells and whistles. Visiting early in the evening can be peaceful before the buzz picks up, making it an easy spot to unwind or grab a quick bite after a busy day.

Oh my god!!! I love this place. Had the falafel sandwich and it was hands down the best I have ever had. Next time I will come back for a vegetarian burger and then the x-large pizza. Another customer got the pizza and it looked soooo good and it was HUGE. I also bought some cookies and the pistachio halawa. I am hooked. Can't wait to go again. 5 stars is not enough. Oh and the owner is very cool and explained everything. Just had a large spinach, onion and mushroom pizza with my daughter. Still the best pizza around. Just AMAZING!!!

Cute, no frills neighborhood place. we got there super early at 5 and were the only customers there. The food was good and fresh, kids had chicken shawarma platter and husband had the Ruben sandwich, I had the gyro special. My favorite of everything was the garlic sauce. I'll definitely be back.

We ordered a large pepperoni pizza and two chicken shawarma platters. The pizza is okay. I feel as though the top of the pizza wasn't cooked enough to get that very light golden brown appearance. The crust of the pizza is okay. The tomato sauce is uninspiring, not necessarily flavored or seasoned. They put a lot of mozzarella cheese on the pizza but the volume of cheese throws off the balance of the pie. It's too much cheese per bite. The chicken shawarma was also okay. The chicken was chopped into dime to quarter-sized pieces and was well-seasoned. The chicken (maybe because the pieces are cut so small) was a little bit dry. Fries were good. Salad was good, but I really wish they did not top the salad with pickles. I'd say 30% of people don't like pickles so much and it unfortunately bleeds the flavor into the rest of the salad. The bread to wrap the chicken was...okay. It didn't have a composition that wowed me. And for the price of 16 dollars, it made the overall value of the meal okay, nothing to blow you away. Overall I think the experience is a 3.7/5. Mind you, this experience may have been below the typical average because we ordered 40 minutes before close. But first impressions do last. I think I would lean more toward some of the surrounding Redland restaurants as places to visit with potentially better flavor and consistency. Pizza is definitely superior at Pizza Rosa but nothing else compares to their pies.

Salad was really good. Portions are good too. Meats and rice could use more flavor, more lock and sauce would add variety and kick to it. White sauce was good flavor but was watered down feeling too much. Bread pits was fine. Overall good needs some upgrades to be great.

The service at Sasuns is always warm and caring. Thank you Vatche for always being so welcoming and going the extra mile to ensure clients get a great meal. This is a great restaurant for take out, but you can also eat indoors or outside on the deck. A personal favorite is the chicken shawarma; tasty, nicely seasoned with delicate spices, wrapped in a very thin warm flat bread. Exactly how it should be made and truly delicious. The hummus, falafel, and kibbeh are magnificent. The greek salad is always freshly made and quite generous. You can top it with chicken, gyro meat, or falafel. If you love meat, try the Whole Beef Kebab and savor the seasoning and quality of the filet. Vatche, the gentle owner, continues to surprise us with his delicious cuisine. We keep going back weekly. This cozy little restaurant is a hidden gem in Redland. Stop by - you'll be happy you did. On Tuesdays chicken shawarmas are on special and on Thursday, the special is Gyro. Venture out a little and try the Falafel Sandwich. It won't disappoint. It is crispy, nicely seasoned, and you can add yogurt sauce or tahini. There are also burgers, fries, and pizza on the menu. Parking is plentiful and located behind the restaurant.

Wow, what a gem. Sad I have not stopped by here sooner. Decided to surprise my Armenian wife with some of her favorite dishes, she and I both were blown away with how good the food was, how good the prices were relative to the quality, and the food gave her a feeling of Nostalgia. Highly recommend if you are in the Derwood area.
